Covering Bhutto’s Assassination Via Interactive Media
Saturday, December 29th, 2007I’ve been interested in the American newspaper’s progress during the digital age. It’s been a major struggle, as even the best of print journalists have very little understanding of new media.
But there’s a terrific slide show from John Moore, a Getty photographer, who attended Benazir Bhutto’s last rally, where she was assassinated, and posted on the New York Times site.
Moore talks in the first person over his photos, bringing you into the story far more effectively than in your typical print story.
And there’s also an “interactive timeline” provided by the Times that’s simple, but informative. Nothing spectacular — but they are making progress.

Ice Cream and $: The Death of Targeted Marketing
Friday, December 28th, 2007See if you can follow this one:
The guy who runs Denali, an ice cream flavoring company and the inventors of Moose Tracks ice cream, decided to start a financial advice website, Free Money Finance, so he could own a portal and get free on-line marketing for his ice cream company.
Huh?
Makes no sense, right? Well he now gets 100,000 or so visitors a month to FreeMoneyFinance and not only advertises his ice cream, but other brands and serves up Ads by Google as well. He’s even pushing a budgeting program for a fee (he maintains he likes it a whole lot.)
The ads on his site are tiny blog ad creatives and can’t be doing that much for his ice cream business. He gives away his financial site revenue to charity. What gives here?

FOX Screws the Pooch
Tuesday, December 25th, 2007
The same network that sued YouTube was just caught stealing a copyrighted picture of a dog off of a blogger’s site, altering it slightly, and airing it in an NFL broadcast that itself was loaded with copyright warnings! [Link to full story at Sweatney.com, where I swiped the picture above to get all meta on you]
It will be interesting to see how this plays out, given the potentially huge audience watching the broadcast of this stolen image and the photographer’s anger over the theft. [via boingboing.net]
Verizon: My Home 2.0
Saturday, December 22nd, 2007FiOS is Verizon’s fiber optic connection that delivers jaw-dropping Internet speeds and a truly digital home. Verizon asked Campfire to communicate this idea in a way that went beyond speed tests, tech jargon, competitive ads or online banners. The resulting campaign used TV, Web and events in new ways, to tell the story of five families experiencing a 2.0 transformation. Campfire re-appropriated “paid programming” to launch an original technology makeover show, “My Home 2.0,” then supported it with block parties that energized entire neighborhoods along with a website which let viewers enter the story, and chart their own path to 2.0 living.

10,000 Free Frozen iPods
Friday, December 14th, 2007What a great marketing idea!
“Brazilian ice-cream company Kibon … [is] including the actual prize inside the popsicle: they will manufacture 10,000 specially made propsicles, identical in size and color to the actual thing, frozen with iPod shuffles inside.” (Gizmodo)

Bug Lab’s BUG
Thursday, December 6th, 2007Bug Labs is preparing to release their fully hackable hardware platform, the BUG. Think of it as an open source gadget that is what you make it. While it’s probably not for the masses, it turns gadgets and hardware design totally upside down.
Robert Scoble has some great video that shows how it all works.
“Wow. Wow. Wow.” is right.
